Local Activities and Attractions

Cycling, walking, horse riding, fishing, golf, tennis and countless water sports are just some of the activities you might choose whilst staying with us. The outstanding beaches of the Atlantic coast are within easy reach as are the gorgeous sheltered coves at Meschers, just half an hours drive away. There are numerous restaurants nearby offering everything from good local food to gourmet dining. The local specialities are Pineau, of course Cognac and fabulous seafood including oysters and 'moules'. Fresh produce can be bought at the daily local markets in the surrounding villages.

The beautiful wine regions of Medoc, St Emillion, Côtes de Bourg and Côte de Blaye are also within an hour's drive. We would be delighted to arrange wine tasting on your behalf.

The seaside resort of Royan is a short distance away. It has a fabulous covered market, international restaurants, elegant shops, casino and 56km of sandy beaches. Also worth a visit is the zoo at La Palmyre. It is by far the best zoo in France, set in over 35 acres with 1600 animals and birds to see.

Slightly further inland is the roman town of Saintes which is the economic capital of the Charente Maritime. Here you will find a wealth of medieval buildings. Fairs are held every month. Saintes is a lively old town with lots of restaurants and bars to choose from.

Cognac with its ancient streets is the jewel of the Charente. Francois I, King of France was born here. The huge 16th century mansions are evidence of its former prosperity, but today Cognac is still a thriving town. It would be impossible to visit Cognac without inspecting the big Cognac producers Remy Martin, Hennessy, Martell and Otard, which all offer guided tours including free tastings. You can also buy brandy from the shop.

Jarnac, the birthplace of François Mitterand, is also a town dedicated to brandy. You will find treasures of romanesque art, and the banks of the Charente offer wonderful walks.
